Public-Customer Credit Watch
A planned watchlist for trade credit teams, built around the public companies that buy from you on credit. It will report warning signs from their filings with the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission): weaker liquidity, debt coming due, late filings, and events such as a bankruptcy filing or a change of auditor.
In development. Not for sale yet: no price and no release date.
What it will cover
- A financial distress score (the Altman Z-score) and the liquidity trend for each company, from its filed numbers
- Debt maturities coming due
- Notices that a company will file its annual or quarterly report late
- Events reported on Form 8-K, such as a bankruptcy filing, accelerated debt, a delisting notice, an auditor change or a warning that past results will be restated
Who it is for
Trade credit managers
Decide whether to raise, hold or cut a customer’s credit line.
Credit and collections teams
Spot a customer’s late filing or debt trouble before the next order ships.
Sources it will use
Annual, quarterly and current reports (Forms 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K) and late-filing notices, from EDGAR (Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval), the SEC’s public filing system.
SEC financial data
The figures reported in those filings, read from the SEC’s free data service (data.sec.gov) rather than retyped.
How it will be made
Arithmetic on filed numbers
Every figure is computed by code from numbers the company filed, and footnoted to the filing.
Indicators, not a rating
The scores are warning signs to look into. They are not a credit rating.
Public companies only
It cannot see private customers. The Z-score formula does not suit banks and insurers, so it will not be used for them.
