Texas Openings Radar
A planned report on new businesses getting ready to open in Texas. It will join public records by address: new sales tax permits from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, pending liquor license applications at the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC), and commercial building permits. A sales tax permit on its own can belong to a home business or an online seller, so the report is built around businesses that appear in more than one record.
In development. Not for sale yet: no price and no release date.
What it will cover
- New businesses by industry and area, with the records each one appears in and their dates
- A short list of the businesses that match across the most records
- An estimated opening window, printed only after we have measured how often the estimate is right
- The change from the week before, by metro area
Who it is for
Commercial insurance agents
Reach a new business before it has chosen an insurer.
Point-of-sale and payments sales reps
Pitch a new shop or restaurant before it has picked a payment system.
Food and beverage distributors
Find new restaurants and bars while they are still choosing suppliers.
Other business-to-business vendors
Contact a business before its doors open, when it is still buying.
Sources it will use
Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts: sales tax permits
New sales tax permits, with an industry code and the first sale date, published on the Texas Open Data Portal.
Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC): pending applications
Liquor license applications that have not been decided yet, published on the Texas Open Data Portal.
Texas city building permits

How it will be made
Matched by address
Records are joined by address and business name. Each listing shows the records it rests on, with their dates and links.
Home addresses left out
Businesses registered at a sole proprietor’s home address will not be listed with that address.
Numbers come from code
Counts and week-to-week changes are computed by code from the records and footnoted.
